Mayor Palmer Announces the 2008 Small Business of the Year Award Winners
At a press conference held at the Trenton Train Station on Monday, October 6, 2008 Mayor Douglas H. Palmer announced the annual Small Business of the Year Award winners. They are:
Small Business of the Year Award
City Beef
246 North Willow Street
Peter Diaz, Owner and Sole Partner of City Beef, moved to New Jersey from Puerto Rico in 1953 and grew up in the Mill Hill section of Trenton. After a four year stint in the Air Force, he came back to Trenton in 1971 and was offered a partnership in City Beef. He has been involved in the business ever since, having bought out his partners over the years. City Beef provides meats and produce to the diverse ethnic groups within the greater Trenton community.
Peter is committed to hiring local minorities right out of high school and teaching them the art of meat cutting and processing and the importance of good customer service. With a full-time staff of 13, Peter has very little employee turnover, a testament to the investment he makes in them.
Peter is a frequent donor to the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen, local churches, community events and block parties. He also donates to the police and fire department “night out” events. When someone calls, this fixture of the Trenton community for over three decades, is readily on hand to help out. Service to his customers and his community is his mantra, and it seems to have served him well.
Most Improved Appearance Award
Garces & Grabler, P.C.
253 Front Street
William J. Garces, Esquire and William N. Grabler, Esquire are partners in the largest Hispanic-speaking law firm in New Jersey. With over 100 employees and seven locations around the state, the firm practices all types of law including workers compensation, personal injury, family, immigration and bankruptcy.
In May of 2007 the firm purchased its location at 253 Front Street. With the goal of serving the greater Trenton area with their expertise, they hired local contractors to completely revamp and restore the building inside and out. Some of its new features are a new parking lot, new window throughout and very attractive stucco siding that catches the eye of all who go by. The firm current has 10 employees and in Trenton, and they plan to “grow with the community” as they have done in other parts of New Jersey - always with an emphasis on hiring local talent.
Already a supporter of cultural parades and other events, they continue to immerse themselves into the Trenton community. As far as the type of service they provide, their web site says it all – the firm is “big enough to win – small enough to care.”
Most Successful New Business Award
Gilmore’s Café LLC
118 South Warren Street
Kevin Gilmore, owner of Gilmore’s Café, has always loved people and cooking and aspired to owning a coffee shop for many years before his dream came true. A native of Trenton, Kevin grew up in Bucks County, but moved back to Mill Hill in Trenton in 1992. His experience in working in the non-profit field and helping its clients establish businesses proved to be powerful training for his ultimate dream. The friendly atmosphere, delicious cuisine, and Friday evening entertainment schedule have helped to make this one-year old business a success.
Kevin did quite a bit of due diligence before selecting Trenton as his location. After researching the demographics and closely inspecting Warren Street and the good vibes it gives off, he selected his current site. He credits the City of Trenton’s Urban Enterprise Zone status as a positive factor in his decision. The City’s ETI program also contributed to the creation of his overall business plan.
Gilmore’s is open from 6:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. on Friday and 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Saturday serving such delectables as gourmet soups, barbeque pulled pork, ice cream, desserts and fruit smoothies
